| Make Your Own Index |
| Step 1 of 2 - Select Indicators |
|
This tool contains standardized indicators derived from data on this
website. The data are normalized on a 0-100 scale by taking the actual value
for each country, subtracting the minimum value, dividing by the difference
between minimum and maximum values, and then multiplying by 100. For example,
the value of oil reserves in Greece is US$412.39 million. The minimum value
of oil reserves around the world is US$0, while the highest value is
US$1,094,193 million. Thus the standardized value of oil reserves in Greece
is [(412.39-0)/(1,094,193-0)]*100 = 0.037689. For all indicators, higher
values are “better” than lower values.
The first step is to select the indicators to be included in your index. The indicators are divided into nine categories of human development, and as many as 10 indicators can be selected. To select several individual indicators from the same list hold down the control key on a PC, or the apple/command key on a Macintosh. Holding the shift key will select the indicators highlighted, as well as all the ones in-between. Once the desired indicators have been selected, click on the "NEXT" button to proceed to step two. |
